St. Luke's Hospital
Dublin, Ireland

For almost half a century St. Luke's Hospital, Dublin has been Ireland's main radiotherapy treatment centre for people suffering from cancer. Set up in 1981 by Professor Michael O'Halloran, who was Medical Director at the time, The Friends of St. Luke's Hospital aims to raise funds to enhance the care, comfort and management at St Luke's Hospital.

In 1981 the Hospital was in need of funds to purchase vital Cancer treatment equipment and government funding was very tight at the time. The Friends initial target was €320,000 and these funds were raised in just over a year due to fundraising activities and some very generous covenant donations. The Department of Health matched the funds raised and St. Luke’s first Linear Accelerator was purchased. Such was the success of the fundraising and the momentum of the goodwill built up that it was decided to keep The Friends together for a further period.

In August, 2002, St. Luke's Hospital became the first TELESYNERGY® site in the Republic of Ireland. St. Luke's Hospital began collaborating with Belfast City Hospital in Northern Ireland as part of the All Ireland Cancer Consortium.

Equipment installed at this site: Full TELESYNERGY® system using NIH software on a Sun Workstation.
