Cork University Hospital is one of the largest acute-care hospitals in the Republic of Ireland and is also the principal teaching hospital attached to the University
College Cork's Medical School in Cork City. It has 577 beds and during 2001 there were 25,258 Day Case Admissions, 113,886 outpatient visits and 26,981 Inpatient Admissions, thus making it one of the busiest hospitals in Ireland. Cork University Hospital is the only level 1 trauma center for the Republic of Ireland, an accreditation given because of the wide range of medical specialties available at the hospital.
In March 2006, Cork University Hospital joined the TELESYNERGY® network, becoming the third TELESYNERGY® site in the Republic of Ireland and the first outside of the city of Dublin.
